'Birds of a Feather Flop Together'
For the Birds of a feather flop together series, Lydia interprets the behaviour of groups of birds as a metaphor for human interaction.
Lydia Hardwick is fresh from art school and working towards a successful career based upon playful installation.
The artist has developed a sophisticated and witty conceptual style to her work as a result of her recent undergraduate art studies. She uses ceramic materials to create animals that interact with banal human domestic and industrial surfaces. Lydia presents situations that are simultaneously tragic and humorous, using the animals to comment on aspects of human nature, inadvertently allowing us to laugh at ourselves.
Lydia’s love for risk taking and spontaneity works in harmony with her technique. Firing her own pieces up to four times acts as a game of ‘Russian Roulette’ for the artist but the end result is an innovative product of patience, careful development and experimentation.
Growing up in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, Lydia has returned home and now bases her practise within the surroundings of an industrial collaborative studio space that is home to the Coexist collective of artists. Lydia completed a degree in Ceramics at Camberwell College of Art in 2009.
Since her graduation she has participated in several shows, including a solo exhibition in Hastings. Recently shown in Ceramic Review Magazine, Lydia will be watched closely by all who appreciate the beauty of a fresh take on ceramics.
