Chris Miles is a new artist at Interior Angle and has exhibited with Interior Angle since 2009.
Chris sets out to create semi-abstract images by reference to the colours, form and texture of natural subjects.
Chris is a self-taught painter who finds his inspirations from embedding himself in the local artistic community and cultural experiences. Collaborations and sharing ideas with local artists have played an important role in his artistic development.
Chris’ most recent Cherry Blossom collection is perfect for thoughts of changing seasons and was a product of his recent adventures in Japan. Chris was drawn to Cherry Blossom as a subject as much by the special sense of the celebration of season that it evokes for the Japanese people as by its stunning visual impact.
The pieces have been created in the studio using documentary material and pen and ink sketches made in Japan as reference material. A move away from direct observation and almost a memory captured in between soft expressive marks is how best to consider Chris’ collection. True to shape, Chris does pay homage to the subject matter by ensuring the cherry blossom is still in its ‘true’ form but displaces it by using colour, shape, emotive marks and clever variations of light to create an enchanted feel. Joyous and simple, these pieces will freshen up any living space.
The ‘series’ element of the artist’s work is significant to his development as inspiration is taken from previous paintings and enables the collection to evolve in harmony with each piece created.
Chris was born in Essex and still resides in the heart of the county now. Whilst pursuing a technical career, Chris had an active interest in painting and was a founder member of a Chelmsford-based contemporary art group in the late 1980s. Since then Chris has focused all of his energy in his artistic practise.
